Meetings

Dear Friends,

Please join us on Saturday, October 26, 2024, from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM, for a Club breakfast at the Southampton Inn with several informative presentations.

We will begin with an intriguing discussion on the concepts of social justice and democracy, presented by two of our Club members, husband-and-wife professors Nicholas Michelli and Tina Jacobowitz. Their presentation is based on their newest book, Education for Social Justice: The Meaning of Justice and Current Research. The book also explores how we understand the concept of democracy and how it can or cannot be linked to social justice. Given that voters list democracy as their second biggest concern this year, right after the economy, it is important for us to understand just how people understand that concept.

It is an eBook and download it, free of charge.

Nick and Tina recommend looking at chapters 1 and 8, if you have time, since their presentation is based on those chapters. And come with lots of questions!

Both of their biographies are in the eBook. Look at their long list of credentials and then you can appreciate how lucky we are that they will be presenting their research to our membership.

Originally, their presentation was to be followed by Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker, our outstanding candidate for the NYS Senate, and Southampton Town Board member Tommy John Schiavoni, our equally outstanding candidate for the NYS Assembly. Due to scheduling conflicts, they are unable to attend but we encourage you to continue campaigning for them and help GOTV. At the end of our event, you will learn more about how you can help elect all our great Democratic candidates.

As our next presenter, we are lucky to be joined by Kevin McDonald from The Nature Conservancy, who has stepped in to answer all our questions about Proposition 2, on the back of the ballot. Earlier this year, we had a guest speaker to address Prop 1, the NY ERA Referendum, but we have yet to discuss Prop 2, which addresses water issues in our district.

Here is a little information about Kevin:

Since 2004, Kevin McDonald has been a senior policy advisor for the Nature Conservancy, working on public financing that advances innovative environmental policy for land protection and more clean water. He has advocated and run campaigns for ballot initiatives to benefit the environment in Suffolk County. At the Nature Conservancy, Mr. McDonald is responsible for strategy and government relations efforts to identify and secure public funding to support land protection, habitat restoration, and improved environmental management initiatives across Long Island.

Then, lastly, after our guest speakers, we will learn about what we can all do in the last week of the campaign to get all our Democrats elected. Southampton Field Organizer Matthew Lecher will be on hand to provide walk lists to canvas after our event and given that this is the first day of early voting, we can follow up canvassing with a trip to Stony Brook Southampton to cast our votes.

The Southampton Inn is located at 91 Hill St, Southampton, NY 11968. They always do a lovely job for us, and we look forward to holding another event with them this year. The breakfast buffet will be from 10:00-11:00 AM, with the guest speakers and Q&A period to follow.

Purchase your breakfast tickets online by credit card or PayPal at www.shdemclub.com. The online price is $35 for Club members and $45 for non-members. Tickets purchased at the door of the event are $40 for Club members and $50 for non-members. Remember, cash or check can pay all tickets purchased at the door for the event only.
